CARPARO STONE
Carparo is a Salento calcarenitic stone.
Its grainy appearance derives from the cementation of limestone rock sediments in a marine environment. Calcarenite of sedimentary origin is commonly defined as tuff in Puglia, however, as tuffs are actually secondary rocks of volcanic origin, very widespread in Lazio and Campania, technical literature prefers to call it calcareous tuff. According to the quality and size of the elementary grains, the quality of the natural binder (calcite) and the final porosity, calcarenite takes on different external aspects and different geotechnical capabilities. In the places of outcrop, the calcarenite can present homogeneous characteristics such as to give rise to an extraction activity for use in construction. According to their use in construction, four main families of calcarenites or calcareous tuffs can be distinguished: the mazzara stone, white, brown, yellowish, very tenacious but difficult to work with traditional tools. Generally it is not dug except accidentally; the carpara stone, yellow, tenacious, difficult to saw, workable only with an ax and chisel. Puglia has numerous carparo quarries, from those with a coarser and more irregular appearance to those of value such as the carparo from the Madre Grazia quarries between Alezio and Gallipoli in Salento whose stone is highly sought after for workmanship and artistic objects; the soft stone, properly called tuff, white, very soft, easily workable. The most important quarries in Salento are the underground ones of Cutrofiano and those in the Taranto area of Fragagnano; the Lecce stone, a calcarenite made up of very fine, well-cemented, marly granules, which has the excellent chiselling properties at the origin of the ostentatious decoration of the Lecce Baroque. It is the least permeable of the calcarenites and is therefore used for building roofs. Everything that is not tuff, Lecce stone or mazzaro is carparo.
