Historical Notes on the Curti Furnace:

The first workshop of the Fornace was located at the Colonne di S. Lorenzo sul Naviglio which flowed where the Via De Amicis now passes. It was back in the 1400s and at the behest of Bianca Maria Visconti, wife of the then Duke of Milan Francesco Sforza, the construction of the Maggiore hospital (Ca 'Granda) was started on a project by Antonio Averulino known as Filarete. It was then that the execution of part of the shaped tiles and bricks modeled by Solari and Guiniforte was entrusted to the noble Giosuè Curti kiln in the service of the Sforza. In the same period also Fondulo, architect and sculptor of the tiles of the Certosa di Pavia, carried out by the Curti the firing of many of his architectural friezes. As the city expanded more and more, in 1700 the factory moved to Ripa di Porta Ticinese with Pietro Curti. Then with Curti Felice he moved in 1800 to the Conchetta on the Naviglio Pavese. In this new location a raging fire destroyed many documents of the family who, following this misfortune, moved with Curti Attilio in the early 1900s to the current location where, first Francesco and then Alberto have continued to keep alive the tradition of Lombard terracotta.
