SIGNA MANUFACTURE
The Manifattura di Signa is an historic ceramic crockery laboratory. It was created in 1895 by the will of Camillo Bondi.
"At the beginning of the twentieth century, Signa was still among the major industrial centers of straw.
To that industry, which had made the name of the country known beyond the national borders, another activity had been added that, from the last luster of the nineteenth century and within a few years, would have re-launched its name on the European markets. and Americans: the artistic terracotta industry "Manifattura di Signa", founded in Signa (Florence), in 1895 by Camillo Bondi, in the premises of the "Fornaci di Signa" factory owned by his brother Angelo.
At that time, the taste for the antique fake continued to seduce with all its charm, and in the ceramics the interest for tradition had pushed the most important Italian manufacturers to revisit renaissance forms and decorations, achieving a high level of craftsmanship expertise. ancient virtuosity of the historian and the grotesque.
If those productions interpreted the ancient with eclecticism typical of the nineteenth century, the Manifattura di Signa instead set itself the perfect resemblance of the true, both through the forms trodden when possible on the original, and by means of simulating patinas those of marble and bronzes and even the failures of time, in order to obtain the appearance of the authentic piece, both visually as well as the tactile sense and, in some bronzes, also sound.
With this spirit, from the mota of the Arno, reproductions of sculptural and decorative masterpieces of all time will take form: from Etruscan statuary to Greek, from Roman to Renaissance, from Moorish vases to contemporary Art Nouveau creations.
The success deriving from this is evidenced by numerous exhibition prizes such as the medal at the Universal Expo in Paris in 1900, where he exhibited numerous plastic terracotta pieces, suitable for decorating the exteriors, with a particular patina that made it look better and more resistant to agents. atmospheric, soon expanded the number of occupations and the specialization of young artists assisted by the experience of renowned sculptors, called to Signa for new ideas by the Bondi brothers, the brilliant founders and leaders of the Manifattura, coming from a family of high Jewish bourgeoisie from Livorno and close to the intellectual and anti-settlorist environment of the Florentine magazine of "Il Marzocco".
Thus, with the new industry, an informal school of young craftsmen was created in Signe, even though they lack regular education, growing under the experience of the sculptors and in contact with the most sublime models of universal classicism, a true concentrate of the world's museums. , were naturally stimulated and educated to the beauty and proportions of forms, so as to become refined craftsmen, plastificatori, sculptors, able to give life to other similar manufactures.
