The common toad (Bufo bufo (Linnaeus, 1758)) is an anuran amphibian of the Bufonidae family, widespread in Eurasia and north-west Africa. The common toad is protected by the Berne Convention for the Protection of Minor Fauna. It is the largest amphibian in Europe, and even reaches 20 cm (excluding legs). It is characterized by its short legs and flattened snout, but also by its typical brownish color, which can tend to reddish, even if the belly tends to be whitish. Its color varies according to the seasons and age, from sex and from the environment in which it is found, passing from brown to red and black depending on the situation. Animals in the southern area of the range tend to be larger and have more "thorny" skin, ie with more prominent warts. There are two oval parotoid glands in its neck. These glands contain a whitish liquid that irritates the mucous membranes that can be secreted in case of danger and is capable of burning and injuring humans as well. The pupils of the common toad are horizontal; the eye is dark gold or copper.
