More info

This clock marked the so-called "italic" hours, according to a system of time measurement that started, rather than from midnight as hour, from the moment of sunset. The internal mechanical system turned a single hand, which ran four full turns of the dial in the arc of each day.

The six-hour clock is better known as a Roman clock because it is widespread especially in Rome and in the religious sphere of Lazio. Its function was to indicate, with the sound of the bells, the ancient Italic hours, adopted above all by the Church. In the Italian hours (from 1200 to 1800) the measurement of time began, instead of midnight as hour, from the Ave Maria in the evening to the end of twilight, that is about half an hour after sunset. The only hand present in the six-hour clock then travels four complete laps to mark the 24 hours
