More info

The zellige (from the Arabic ﺯﻟﻴﺞ, zullayj, "ceramic, majolica, small smooth stone")  is an assembly of cut tiles in glazed terracotta that reproduces a geometric design. The ceramic tiles form a mosaic shape, and are placed on a bed of plaster. It is mainly used as a wall and floor decoration. This decorative art is a feature of Moroccan architecture. The zellige is a Moroccan architectural element, of Berber and Hispano-Moorish origin, which adapts perfectly to contemporary styles of decoration thus preserving the artisanal production. Probably derived from Roman and Byzantine mosaics, the traditional zellige appears in Morocco in the 10th century in shades of white and brown, and then expanded in the 14th century under the Merinid dynasty, with the use of blue, green and yellow. Red will only be used from the 17th century. The old glazes with natural colors were used until the beginning of the 20th century when they probably hadn't evolved much since the time of the Merinids. The Merinid dynasty made extensive use of it, especially in Fez. Today, the color range of zelliges is singularly rich in brilliant colors that can multiply in infinite compositions. The most common form of zellige is the square whose dimensions are variable. Other shapes are also possible in the composition: the octagon combined with a cabochon, the star and the cross. The zellige is used for the walls, but also for the floors. It is then shaped and has a thickness of about 2 cm. There are squares 10 × 10 cm or simply cut to be combined with a colored corner cabochon. The material can be natural or glazed and can be laid in a simple or herringbone pattern.
