More info

The National Roman Museum in Palazzo Altemps is one of the four locations of the National Roman Museum. It is located in the Ponte district in Piazza di San Apollinare 44, near Piazza Navona.

Since 1604, after Pope Clement VIII had authorized the request of Giovanni Angelo d'Altemps, 2nd Duke of Gallese, Pope Aniceto has rested there.

The venue brings together the prestigious collections of ancient sculpture that belonged to noble Roman families and later became state property.

Today it houses several collections, including:

     the Ludovisi Boncompagni collection

     the Mattei collection

     the Altemps collection

     the Dragon Collection

     the Brancaccio collection

     the Egyptian collection.

The palace also includes the ancient private theatre, currently used for temporary exhibitions, and the church of Sant'Aniceto. In the spaces open to the public, traces of the architectural and decorative evolution of the building are also highlighted.
