Peperino or piperino is a magmatic rock, typical of the areas of Vitorchiano and Soriano nel Cimino, in the province of Viterbo, and of the Colli Albani, in the province of Rome, made up of fragments of trachyte or tephra, and containing leucite in various percentages. The classic color is speckled grey.
It is also present in various areas of central Italy such as on Monte Amiata in Tuscany.
In the Middle Ages it was used in blocks as a building material.
